Day 33 - 40 Days of Intentional Joy

Day 33

Books are amazing. Think of all the books you have read in your life and what a gift reading is. How many of our students do not have their own books at home? I’m afraid that it is many more than we would like to imagine. I have read many books in my life, but the only Book that has reads me is the Bible. Let’s think about ways to encourage our students to have access to the joy of books at home. Check out Duffy Books in Homes  for some ideas.

A verse to ponder

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

An intentional joy for the classroom

Today is “Give A Book” Day. One of the most significant gifts of joy we can give is a book. Think about a child on your campus who most likely doesn’t own his/her own book at home.  Find a special book in your classroom library or personal collection and give it to them. Tell them they do not have to return it and that all you ask is that they treasure it and read it at home.

A focus of reflection

Are you able to give a book to a child? Is it legal? Of course! I give books to my teachers frequently and I always watch in amazement at how excited they are. Giving is one of the greatest intentional joys and giving a book is super special. How often are you reading the Book of all books? Take time this weekend to re-invest your study in God’s Word. It is an investment into your professional development that has eternal benefits!

Day 32 - 40 Days of Intentional Joy

Day 32

Do you need to take better care of yourself? Are you super tired at the end of the week? Is there anything we can do to help ourselves and our students to be in better shape?  Without good health, everything else becomes more difficult. We aren’t even able to easily do acts of intentional joy without our health.  Some of our students’ eating habits are so poor that they don’t even know how to make good choices. Let’s help them to begin to be aware of the importance of keeping their bodies strong that they may be great learners.

A verse to ponder

Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!

An intentional joy for the classroom

Start a good health awareness movement with the students. Being in good health means eating better, moving more and resting. Ask some of your students to join you in a good health movement. Create a chart with an area for good foods, exercise and rest. Check off the boxes each day for which you have made an improvement or effort to improve. As we are in high stakes testing periods, what’s the first thing we ask the students to do? Eat a good breakfast.  Let’s encourage those habits of good eating, exercise and rest on a daily basis as an intentional act of joy. How are they going to learn if they are not taking care of themselves? How are we going to teach if we are not taking care of ourselves?

A focus of reflection

Have you thought about how important it is to model good eating habits in front of our students as a Christian? 1st Cor. 16:9 – Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit? If you have been thinking about getting in shape, don’t put it off any longer. Seek better foods and add exercise and rest to your daily routine so that you may be a joy to others.

Day 31 - 40 Days of Intentional Joy

Day 31

Can you believe there are only 10 days left in Lent? (We don’t count Sundays, remember.) In these last 10 days, let’s be intentional about blessing others. Have you ever started the day by asking God to let you be a blessing to everyone around you? He is the One Whom through all blessings flow. Being a joy to others can come in so many ways, but asking God in prayer for the ability to bring joy to someone is a gift. He is able to put just that perfect person in your path today.

A verse to ponder

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

An intentional joy for the classroom

Write a private note of encouragement today to someone you feel prompted to bless. If you don’t have any stationary available, find some printer paper and a blank envelope and create a handwritten note. Be intentional about speaking words of empowerment into the person’s situation. Perhaps you can compliment them on how well they have been trying lately or how much you have noticed that they are being good to others. The key today is to make it a private, personalize handwritten note to someone you can add a little joy to their life.

A focus of reflection

Is it legal to bless others with joy? Of course! Who wouldn’t want to be blessed?  One of the definitions of bless is: to confer well-being or prosperity on. Intentional blessings are always pointed toward our students and colleagues’ well-being. I do ask God most days to be a blessing to others and He definitely helps me. I pray that these 40 days continue to bless you has brought you joy. May God give you the ability to abundantly bless others today.

Day 30 - 40 Days of Intentional Joy

Day 30

I love the audio version of Jerry Bridges, “Who Am I? Identity in Christ,” narrated by Alistiar Begg.  What a combo. We were born to serve others by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our service to others is often supernatural in that we do not naturally put others before ourselves. Let’s be especially intentional today about serving others, our students, our colleagues, our administrators or parents in ways that make their day and bring them joy.

A verse to ponder

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

An intentional blessing for the classroom

Any act of service is an act of joy. Today is “At Your Service Day.” As a server in an upscale restaurant has a white cloth draped over his/her arm and aims to please, we will be deliberate in our actions towards our students. Use the phrases, “How may I help you?” “How may I serve you?” or “What can I do for you?” and wrap the action up with, “We aim to please.” Be contagious.

A focus of reflection

Is it legal to serve others on your campus? Of course! The word serve is defined: to render assistance; be of use; help. Isn’t that what teaching is all about? As Christians, we serve the Living God. As His ambassadors, we shine our light by serving others. May God bless you with opportunities today to serve on “At Your Service Day.”

 Day 29

(Telling jokes is not my gift. This is my weak attempt at humor from Day 29.)

Day 29 - 40 Days of Intentional Joy

Day 29

Isn’t it great to laugh? Don’t you love to hear children’s laughter? I especially love to hear someone belly laugh or laugh so hard that it brings tears to their eyes.  That type of joy is rare, but is so good for us physically and spiritually. A little humor in the classroom goes a long way to create an atmosphere of goodness in your environment.

A verse to ponder

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

An intentional joy for the classroom

How can you keep things cheerful in your classroom? Add a little humor. Today tell the students a joke. Keep it super simple and silly. A little laughter can lighten up any situation. If you not very good at telling jokes, like me, start with a Knock-Knock joke. The fun part is the element of surprise, especially if humor is not the norm in your classroom. A joke a day may be just what we need through testing season.

A focus of reflection

Is it legal to tell jokes in the classroom? Of course! However, there is great wisdom in not making a joke of something or someone. Help the students to understand the difference. Adding humor to the classroom is medicinal and should be used in small portions. What do you think would make God laugh?

Day 28 - 40 Days of Intentional Joy

Day 28

(For the weekend)

There is only one more weekend until Easter when we celebrate the greatest act of love ever. Let’s make an all out effort to be affectionate to those we treasure in our families. They are often the ones that get neglected when we are so busy with so much to do. Slow down this weekend and take stock in the ones you love.

A verse to ponder

Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.

An intentional joy for the family (weekend)

Cherish your family today. Be intentional about kissing your loved ones. Do you realize how much we say, “Love you,” these days. Make sure you tell the ones you love, “I love you,” this weekend. Why not throw some butterfly kisses in while you are at it? Be intentional about letting those you love really know how much you cherish them.

A focus of reflection

Have you told God that you love Him lately? Being a Christian means we have taken on his Name, become a member of His family and call Him “Abba.” We can be just as sloppy about telling God how much we love Him as our family members. Sing love songs to Him and proclaim your love for all He has done. After all, we love Him because He loved us first.
